SPEECH THERAPY

What happens first?
Phone or email for an initial consultation. Every child is different and their needs will change depending on where they are in their developmental journey. The assessment process and recommendations for your child will reflect where they are at a given point in time.

Your child will be assessed at home, nursery/school or in the CFTP clinic.
The initial consultation and assessment will involve discussing your concerns in detail and the impact this may be having on your child and others. We will also gather case history information and any other relevant details.
We will then work with your child to assess their skills and needs. This will involve using both formal (standardised) and informal methods in a child friendly environment.
After the assessment, we will talk to you about the assessment findings and what your child needs. A plan will be agreed with parents about the type of intervention and frequency. In some cases a referral for further assessment will be suggested, for example an audiologist or educational psychologist, to gain further information about your child’s needs. The type of therapy recommended will depend on the outcome of your child’s assessment, this could be;

Direct therapy
The aims of therapy, length and amount of sessions will be agreed on with you and/or your child’s teacher. I will work directly with your child and will suggest activities to be carried out at home/nursery/school. It is recommended that your child has a break following a block of therapy, to consolidate and generalise their skills in their everyday environment. Your child’s goals will be
reviewed at the end of each therapy block and re-evaluated after a consolidation period.

Home or school programme
Aims for home and school programmes will be agreed between you and/or your child’s teacher. Therapy targets and strategies will be modelled to you so you feel confident about implementing them at home. This can be a cost-effective option which can be practiced with the support of clinic sessions.
